Image
A lot many things have been so far in the previous posts as well regarding issues to be addressed and how the awareness needs to be created among the society and the community itself for their rights and benefits. Also we discussed various govt schemes for the same, and also we learnt that only govt schemes won't work until and unless the same are accepted by the society and an ecosystem is crafted for them so that they can learn and grow by getting awared and not being ignored in the society. Also we referred to Chaanan Association of M R Children where we appreciated the fact that not only children but people with every age bracket are taken care over there and they learn by doing I.e by doing creative things such as paintings, envelops and craftings. Also they are given basic learning. So far in order to check their social acceptability we also mentioned the Big Bazar activity that we did with them which was accompanied by 12 volunteers.  Now what about their happiness and skill...

"SOCIALLY DISTANT BUT DIGITALLY CONNECTED"  That is something happening in today's scemerio and all the thanks for the same goes or COVID 19 i.e. Corona Virus which originated from Wuhan China and has now become global pandemic. While the situation has taught us that things like malls, community are immaterial, only our individuality is materialistic as of now with self care by social distancing and getting quarantined.  But do we know there are some effects of the virus on the community with mental disability or intellectual disability . Research has shown that being lonely and physically distant for so long in any situation might cause a traumatic situation for the community and it might cause deteriorated mental ailment .  The loneliness reported by many people with intellectual disabilities has been exacerbated by quarantine. The lockdown means sudden deprivation of specialized services and work opportunities.  Issues over rationing of care further increase ...

In the current scenario, where many NGOs have been into existence and many vocational centers are working for this community, the question arises how much they are aware of their rights and amenities and also most importantly, how well they are treated in the society, and well accepted by the society in general. What level of ignorance they face in real life.  Also, it's not only children who face such issues, there are people of every age bracket under this community and certainly these issues are supposed to be addressed and checked. For this purpose, we picked up the NGO Chaanan Association of MR Children, where not only children but also people of upper age bracket are also trained in their vocational centre . A Big Bazar visit was planned for the community of NGO, with the purpose of checking the level of their awareness and also the response of society towards them. Building an ecosystem for the learning of PwID

Broadly these are the following sources of learning for PwID: As discussed previously in the second post that various government schemes and initiatives that are being in practice for this community. As against awareness not only government policies are important, but their implementation by such community is also very important. The same has not been implemented in India properly because of the fact that these community have articulation issues as they are not able to understand the things, which has become prime concern of their ignorance and societal acceptability. Thus the need of the hour is to create an ecosystem for them so that they can be developed and educated in basic aspects and their life. So the need of the hour these days is to: Also in this regard, these days various NGOs are providing vocational training in the form of making them creative things like poster making and greeting cards. Creating Awareness for Learning of Persons with Intellectual Disability: Government Initiatives

In my previous post, where I addressed the various issues to be addressed in respect of PwID community, also some briefing was also done, In this post my prime agenda will be to highlight how these issues can be addressed and how awareness can be done as in the society and also how the community can also get aware of their rights. Peculiarly, here I would be talking about the need of the hour in today's scenerio, also we will get an insight as of what are the various government initiatives in this regard, also  the numbers are alarming. Up to 3% of India’s 1.3 billion population lives with some form of IDD. Over 12% of Indian children aged 2 to 9 years have neuro developmental disorders. As they grow older, they are stigmatized and are considered less deserving of education and employment. This impacts their ability to achieve their full potential. Some of the government initiatives are discussed as under: National Trust Schemes DISHA - Early Intervention and School R...

Intellectual Disability in India : Briefing and Issues to be addressed

Image
The concept of mental retardation has been widened as of now and is now considered as Intellectual disability, as metal retardation is considered as highly negative term. The disability arises and found in cases ranging from minimum 1 to maximum 32 per 1000 persons depending upon the location and target population of the study. Thus if we consider, then it forms a significant proportion of the people. Gone were the days when this community was ignored in by various societal classes and also by the key people connected to them.  Today many services   like prevention, early intervention, health  services , parent-focused and family-focused interventions, special and inclusion education, vocational training, support for individuals and their families, and community-based rehabilitation  services  are steadily improving, albeit unevenly across different regions and sub-populations. But of all the above, parents' support is something that is the core and getti...
