Intellectual Disability in India : Briefing and Issues to be addressed

The concept of mental retardation has been widened as of now and is now considered as Intellectual disability, as metal retardation is considered as highly negative term. The disability arises and found in cases ranging from minimum 1 to maximum 32 per 1000 persons depending upon the location and target population of the study. Thus if we consider, then it forms a significant proportion of the people. Gone were the days when this community was ignored in by various societal classes and also by the key people connected to them.  Today many services like prevention, early intervention, health services, parent-focused and family-focused interventions, special and inclusion education, vocational training, support for individuals and their families, and community-based rehabilitation services are steadily improving, albeit unevenly across different regions and sub-populations. But of all the above, parents' support is something that is the core and getting applauds and winning major attention towards this and also it has evoked many volunteers to undergo in such community development programmes.

The fact has also instigated to check the behavior and perception of these people towards society and most importantly how society reacts to them, because it is quite natural that parents and key people connected to them will definitely have a different perception regarding them and other people have varying opinions. Ignorance is something expected natural from the society towards them, but if they become aware of their rights and duties, become educated so that they can not be fooled by anyone; on that point we can say that they have won their most of the battle.
Intellectual learning starts with creative learning which are well provided by the vocational centres and rehabilitation centres opened by parents organization where volunteers can come and serve the community.
.
In this aspect, the work done and performed by Chaanan Association of M R Children is highly commendable as they have formed a parents' organization and is working for the well being of their children as well as other people of such community

The upcoming post will provide in detail and deal with various Government Schemes for this community, and will be applied on some specific cases..
